Right. The bank basically accepts that its legacy estate is untouchable. So they just try to build these clumsy workarounds on the periphery. They let those old mainframe systems constrain what they can actually offer to their customers and how they interact with counterparties.

Yes. Let's unpack that mechanism because it's so central to the problem. Um batch processing means the system aggregates a massive pile of transactions throughout the entire day. And then usually around, say, two in the morning, the system essentially locks the digital doors, goes completely offline, and processes all those transactions sequentially to update the central ledger.

Yes, we are talking about long-term savings accounts, massive corporate lending, and complex insurance policies being embedded directly into non-financial platforms.

The global examples in the text really illustrate this maturation. Like, look at Southeast Asia and a platform like Grab. Grab originally launched as a simple ride hailing app, just a utility for getting from point A to point B.

They started by just processing the payments for the marketplace, and now they're offering this massive suite of credit and insurance products directly to the merchants and consumers on their platform.

But perhaps the most illustrative example for legacy institutions is a partnership highlighted in the UK between Nat West, which is one of the largest traditional banks in the country, and Sainsbury's, the massive supermarket chain.

I love this example because it is just so grounded. Let's role-play this for a second to really understand the mechanics. Okay. Imagine you are walking down the produce aisle at Sainsbury's, putting organic tomatoes in your cart. You open the Sainsbury's app to scan a barcode or check your loyalty points. In this new paradigm, what is actually happening between the supermarket and the bank?

In that moment, Sainsbury's, the brand, is providing the customer relationship. They provide the everyday context, the loyalty engine, and the behavioral data. They know what you buy, when you shop, and how much you spend. They have your attention multiple times a week.

For a long time, there was deep skepticism inside traditional institutions. Executives would ask: is this just a lab experiment for our digital innovation team? Are we actually going to make real money being an invisible provider?

Well, the survey data in the Finance X report definitively answers that question. First, let's look at the demand side. 43.5% of users state they adopt embedded financial services simply because of speed and efficiency. It removes the friction of having to pause a purchasing journey to go start a separate banking journey. Consumers fundamentally prefer to finance the car while they are looking at the car.
